It’s spring cleaning season as we usher in the Year of the Horse! Spring cleaning is a common practice in many cultures, often carried out at the end of a year or the beginning of a new one. In Singapore, spring cleaning signifies sweeping away bad luck and ushering in prosperity.
In Japan, that term is known as “Ōsōji”, a tradition of thoroughly cleaning homes, schools, and workplaces in late December. Beyond just the act of cleaning and tidying up, it is very much a spiritual act of renewal and purification of oneself.

As we throw away the old and make space for the new in the physical space, shouldn’t we do the same to our emotional/mental selves?
Do the following sound familiar?
- I need to be strong all the time
- If I’m resting, that means I’m falling behind
- I should have figured this out by now
- If I slow down, I will lose my edge
Recognise that these are just thoughts, with arbitrary timelines, comparisons with your peers, comments from your families.
How about we try this year, to allow you to spring clean these old beliefs that no longer serves you.
Choose to:
- Rest without guilt
- Opt for progress that’s slower but steadier
- Being human, not just capable
- Trust in your own timing
Not everything needs an answer yet. Imagine what a little bit more room means for yourself.
Happy Lunar New Year and may you experience a joyous New Year!
