When’s the last time you played?
Not scrolled. Not binge-watched. I mean really played, where your hands were busy, your mind was calm, and the outside world kind of… disappeared?
As kids, that was our default setting. But as adults? Play starts to feel like a luxury (or worse, a waste of time) – I’m staring at my PlayStation as it stares back at me.
And yet, that feeling you get when you’re in the zone, lost in a hobby, a passion, a good idea? That’s not “just play.”
That’s Flow.
And surprisingly, one of the fastest ways to find it again is by doing something we’ve been told to outgrow: playing with bricks.
ICYMI, we talked about Flow in my earlier post here.
Coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow is a mental state where you’re fully absorbed in what you’re doing; energised, focused, and completely in the moment.
And the secret gateway to Flow? It often starts with play or playfulness.
We use a series of methods to work with our clients, LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY (LSP) being our signature!
LSP is a structured method where you use LEGO bricks to explore ideas, solve problems, and reflect on challenges. Sounds simple, but the results? Deep. Personal. Unexpected.
In LSP, you’re asked to build your thoughts literally. Instead of just talking about your dream job, you build it. Instead of writing bullet points about your team, you model them.
And something incredible happens…
You start building.
You stop overthinking.
You get absorbed.
You start surprising even yourself.
So… Why Should You Care?
Because if you’ve been feeling stuck, distracted, or a little bit “meh” lately…
It might not be a lack of productivity.
It might be a lack of play.
And maybe, just maybe, your next breakthrough won’t come from more thinking, but the answers may be in your hands.
In this world full of noise, play might be the most focused thing you do. And through that play, you might just rediscover a part of yourself that’s been waiting to speak.
So don’t underestimate it. Play seriously, and see what builds.
You can play on your own, but if you’re feeling stuck and want to talk it out with someone, book an Exploration session with me at david@saltnpepper.sg.
