Or maybe you’re spending time with family, but before you know it, you’re scrolling social media out of habit. Hands up if this has happened to you! (it has for me definitely!)

We tell ourselves we’ll be present later, when things slow down. But let’s be real, when’s that ever going to happen?

In today’s fast-moving world, we are required to plan ahead. But in doing so, we often forget to live in the moment.

Here’s where the Japanese concept of Ichi-go Ichi-e (一期一会) comes in.

This simple but profound concept reminds us that every moment is unique and will never happen the same way again.

What is Ichi-go Ichi-e?

Ichi-go Ichi-e means “one time, one meeting”. It has its meaning from traditional Japanese tea ceremony culture, where the host and guests treat each gathering as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Even if the same people meet again, the moment will never be exactly the same; the weather, the mood, the conversations, the feelings. You will not experience the same thing twice. And that is exactly why being in the moment (present) is so important.

At its core, Ichi-go Ichi-e is about:

Being fully present

Letting go of distractions

Treating every experience as special

The moment you’re in right now will never come again. And that’s exactly why they matter.

Why Being Present Matters More Than Ever

Let’s be honest. Some respond with “we are busy” whenever someone asks us how we’ve been.

We juggle so many things at once:
📱 Scrolling Instagram while eating lunch.
📧 Replying to emails in between meetings.
💭 Thinking about tomorrow (or work!) while having dinner.

And the worst part? We’ve gotten so used to it that we don’t even realise we’re missing out on real moments.

Ichi-go Ichi-e reminds us that life is happening right now. Not tomorrow, not next week, but at this exact moment.

Being present helps us:
✅ Strengthen relationships – When we truly listen, people feel valued.
✅ Reduce stress – Focusing on the present stops us from worrying about things we can’t control.
✅ Improve decision-making – When we slow down, we think clearer.
✅ Find joy in simple things – Even the smallest moments become meaningful.

One thing I’ve noticed in coaching? Many people struggle to be present. (That’s ok btw, here to help.)

They come into coaching looking for answers, but they’re so caught up with worrying about the future that they can’t see what’s right in front of them.

This is why Ichi-go Ichi-e is so powerful.

The KoPlay Method uses play as a key instrument; through guided play, clients build, reflect, and discover insights without forcing it. (I invite you to try.)

How to Practise Ichi-go Ichi-e in Daily Life

You don’t need to book a meditation retreat to be present. Here are easy ways to bring Ichi-go Ichi-e into your life:

1. Give People Your Full Attention

Put your phone away when talking to someone.

Listen to understand, not just to reply.

Treat every conversation like it’s a one-time experience.

2. Slow Down & Enjoy Small Moments

Instead of rushing through meals, actually taste the food, you can try by describing the taste, the colour, the texture.

If you’re drinking coffee or tea, enjoy the smell, the warmth, the first sip.

3. Do One Thing at a Time (I know that whole multi-tasking culture, not helping!)

If you’re walking, just walk, feel the breeze, hear the sounds around you.

If you’re playing with your kids, be fully present – not thinking about work.

Multitasking isn’t always efficient – it just makes everything less meaningful.

4. Let Go of Perfection

Some moments are messy, awkward, or unpredictable, that’s okay.

Not everything needs to be captured, planned, or posted.

Life is happening now.

Final Thoughts: Every Moment is a Gift

Ichi-go Ichi-e isn’t about making every moment “perfect” – it’s about experiencing each moment.

The conversations you have, the experiences you share, the choices you make – they will never happen in the same way again.

So instead of always chasing the next big thing, let’s appreciate what’s right in front of us.

Here’s a free Ichi-go Ichi-e Mindfulness Workbook so you can start practising mindfulness and focus on the present.

You can absolutely work on this exercise on your own or if you’re feeling stuck and want to talk it out with someone, book a KoPlay Discovery Play Session with me at david@saltnpepper.sg.

[Freebie Alert]: Ichi-go Ichi-e Mindfulness Workbook You’re having coffee with an old friend, but instead of enjoying the conversation, your mind is half-stuck on work deadlines and unread WhatsApp messages.
